A back valve is a ventilation component installed in the ductwork that prevents air from flowing backward. When the fan is not operating, air from the ventilation system or the outside can flow into the fan, causing a range of undesirable effects – from cooling the room to allowing dirty air to enter during winter, as well as transporting mold and mildew that have settled in the ventilation system.
